In a bid to invigorate economic ties, India and Canada have launched a joint trade and investment platform, aiming to foster direct dialogue between business communities and encourage new investment opportunities. This initiative, announced through a joint statement on Friday, is seen as a significant step towards bringing the industry sectors of both nations closer and strengthening long-term business partnerships.

The announcement follows Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Canada, which spanned from May 25 to 27. During this official trip, Goyal engaged with key industry representatives and trade organizations. A pivotal bilateral meeting also took place with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, where discussions covered various topics related to trade, investment, and economic cooperation.

According to the joint statement, the new trade and investment platform will serve as a common stage for Indian and Canadian business leaders. Its goal is to identify new business opportunities, boost investment, and further strengthen commercial relations between the two countries. Officials believe that regular dialogue and direct contact will accelerate business activities and open up collaboration opportunities in new sectors.

Both countries have agreed not only to enhance business cooperation but also to increase people-to-people contacts. This includes facilitating business travel, encouraging the movement of professionals, and strengthening direct business relations. These measures are expected to create a favorable environment for investment and trade expansion.

During the discussions, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is considered crucial for the economic relations between India and Canada. This agreement could support better market access, strengthen supply chains, and increase investment flows. There is a shared goal to continue negotiations and finalize the agreement by the end of this year, which is anticipated to reduce trade barriers and create new economic opportunities in several sectors. Furthermore, Canada’s International Trade Minister, Maninder Sidhu, disclosed plans to lead a special trade delegation to India by the end of the year. This mission aims to connect Canadian companies with the Indian market and broaden cooperation between the industries of both nations. Experts believe that this recent initiative will strengthen economic relations between India and Canada, paving the way for collaboration in investment, manufacturing, technology, and other areas. Both governments are keen on making business dialogue more active in the future.
